Living in Fernie

Living in Fernie.

A small mountain town in the Elk Valley, in the southeast corner of British Columbia. Here is what matters if you are thinking about moving for the job.

Winter

The ski hill is ten minutes from the office.

Fernie Alpine Resort sits a ten-minute drive from downtown, with a regular shuttle in season. It is known for deep snow: the season runs from early December to mid-April, and January and February are the peak months for powder.

2,500+acres of skiable terrain
5alpine bowls: Currie, Lizard, Cedar, Timber and Siberia
9 m+average snowfall a year
1,000 m+of vertical

Summer

Mountain-bike and hiking trails start at the edge of town, and the Elk River runs through it. From May the office closes at 4:30, which leaves long evenings.

The town

Historic downtown is walkable, and the office is on 2nd Avenue in the middle of it. Most clients are neighbours: shops, trades, families and the societies that run local programs.

Getting here

About three hours' drive from Calgary, and about an hour from Cranbrook's airport. Fernie runs on Mountain Time, the same as Calgary.

Before you move

Two things to plan for.

People who move here and stay are the ones who planned for these.

Housing

Rentals are in demand, especially in the autumn before ski season. Start looking as soon as you have an offer. Relocation assistance is available for the right candidate.

Winter driving

Highway 3 through the mountains needs winter tires from October to April, and a car makes the hill and the valley easier to reach.
